Once you have finished your preflight check, there are a few more safety tips to consider. The most important: check the frequencies of other radio control planes or other radio control craft in the area. Most sites designated for the use of radio control craft have a board where frequencies are reported. Check to make sure you arent about to create chaos by launching a craft in a frequency already being used. If there is a pilot with the same frequency, share airtime so that you both can enjoy the day.


Keep spectators at a distance when you are starting your plane. For that matter, keep your plane away from spectators during all times of operation. A low fly by near people may look good in the movies, but it is not very appreciated in the radio control planes world. There are too many opportunities for parts to come loose or the plane to simply reel out of control creating a dangerous situation for someone who just wants to see some good flying. Dont endanger other people.

Safe problem

Remember that safety isnt just about you; its also about all of the fellow pilots and the spectators that expect their experience to be safe and enjoyable as well. The following is a brief list of some of the general safety issues each pilot needs to address for the safe and enjoyable participation in this hobby.


Your responsibility to safety begins with a preflight check of your radio control plane. The things to check for are: Cracks in the plane components Repairs that appear to be worn out or in need of more attention The propellers. If you remove the propellers for transport, it is very important to remount it in the correct orientation. Also, any deformation or gouges in the propeller can affect how the plane responds to its controls. A bad prop is a bad plane. Also, propellers are difficult to fix back to new, so your best bet is to get a brand new one and enjoy the precision control you are looking for. The engine, battery, servos, and other components. Check to see that these are securely fastened to the plane. Check the tightness of screws and bolts.


In general, make sure everything that is not supposed to move doesnt, and everything that is supposed to move does so in a controlled fashion. For example, make sure propellers spin but that they dont wobble. Also make sure the battery is charged and the connectors are all connected properly.

Handling Safety Information

Charging Safety Tips:


Be absolutely sure that the Lithium battery charger settings are correct for the battery pack being charged if yours is not an automatic charger. Care should be taken to charge on a fireproof surface, such as brick. Do not charge batteries near flammable items or liquids Keep a dry fire extinguisher nearby - or a large bucket of dry sand, which is a cheap and effective extinguisher. Do not charge inside an automobile, especially while driving A lithium ion battery should NEVER be left unattended while charging


Handling Precautions:


New cells may have a high initial charge, and care must always be taken to insure that loose cells are not short circuited. Do not put the loose cells in a pocket, bag, or drawer where they could short-circuit against other items, or the battery tabs could be pressed against each other. Do not place the loose cells on any conductive surface, such as a metal-topped table. Keep loose lithium ion battery cells and battery packs WELL out of reach of children! Take care that the cells are not punctured, especially by metallic objects like hobby knives. If the electrolyte in the cells should get on your skin, thoroughly wash with soap and water. If in the eyes, rinse thoroughly with cool water. Immediately seek medical attention. Although environmentally friendly, a lithium ion battery must be FULLY discharged before disposal. Buy a battery discharger to accomplish this and to avoid the possibility of a short-induced fire after disposal.

Info for Carbon Fiber Rod

The appearance of this cloth generally depends on the size of thread and the weave chosen. Carbon fibre is naturally a glossy black, but recently colored carbon fiber rods have become available.


The ribbons mentioned above are then combined with epoxy resins to form reinforced composites which are very light and very strong for their weight. In fact, carbon fibre composites are often used to replace metals in airplanes, tennis rackets and golf clubs!


Carbon fiber rods and tubes are made by pulling or wrapping carbon fibers and epoxy resin to a specific diameter which in turn forms a densely reinforced carbon composite.


How to Work with Carbon Fiber Here's a handy tip: did you know that CA or "Krazy Glue" debonder (acetone) dissolves CA glues but does no damage to carbon fiber rods? This means that you can re-use old rods and tubes by soaking the part in acetone for a couple of hours and then wiping it off!


Cutting rods: use an abrasive cutoff wheel chucked in a Dremel tool or else a very fine 32 teeth-per-inch hacksaw. Do not use a band saw. However, to cut small rods up to 3mm in diameter you can also use a bicycle braided-cable cutter available from many bike stores. The V-shaped jaws prevent the ends from splintering. If you work with a lot of carbon fiber they're well worth buying.


Attaching overlapping carbon fiber rods: tack the rods together with a small DROP of medium CA, let dry then take a length of cotton thread (or Kevlar thread for super-strength) and wrap the joint several times all the way around, then soak the joint with thin CA. You'll be amazed at how strong and flexible the joint is!

There are a variety of different electric remote control snowmobiles that are on the market, many scaled from the real thing. Take for


example the Ski-Doo Fusion 900, which is the mini model, of the real thing. Many of these electric models are very realistic looking


with attention to detail.


They come with a 9.6V battery pack or 7.2V battery pack. Although the electric models are a lot of fun, performance is minimal and so is


the excitement level. They are an excellent starter RC snowmobile but if you really want a rush youll want to invest in a nitro powered


version.


If you invest in a nitro model get ready to enjoy an aggressively designed snowmobile thats ready to race through the backcountry, or


race against your friends. Because of the speed associated with the nitro units its not the best starter option.


You should spend some time at slower speeds learning how your snowmobile responds to the remote controls. That way youll save yourself a


lot of downtime doing repairs. Actually if you crack up at high speeds you could destroy your snowmobile and your winter fun.


The nitro remote control snowmobile are more geared towards adult modeler or a very mature teen modeler. The sound effects of the nitro


make it very real, and there is no question that their high performance makes them a great choice for that higher level of excitement.


So you see, winter doesnt have to be boring and you dont have to spend your days wishing spring would arrive. Instead, grab your boots


and mittens, get off the coach, and get outside to enjoy your RC snowmobile, packed with hours of entertainment and get ready for an

Nitro RC cars

Radio Control System In hobby quality nitro RC cars the radio control system is fully proportional. This means that the speed of the car can be finely controlled. You can go at 0% to 100% full speed, and any speed in between, just like a real car. The same goes for steering the car. You can turn left gently, or turn left aggressively. You can turn right gently, or turn right aggressively.


Radio control parts that are installed inside a nitro RC car:


1. Receiver

6. On/off switch Transmitter - The transmitter is what you hold in your hand.


Your left hand is usually used to squeeze the trigger, which controls the speed of the car. The more you squeeze, the faster the car will go. If you want to stop or brake, push the trigger towards the opposite direction. Your right hand controls the steering wheel on the transmitter. This controls the direction of the car, whether to turn left, right, or just go straight. The stick type used two sticks. The left stick is used to control the speed of the car, and the right stick is used to steer the car.


The pistol type uses a trigger and a steering wheel. The trigger is used to control the speed of the car, the wheel to steer the nitro RC cars. The transmitter needs a 12-volt supply to run, usually via eight AA sized batteries. Receiver - The receiver is a small rectangular device mounted on the nitro RC car. It has a wire (usually 19) that acts as an antenna to receive signals from the transmitter. Gas RC cars need a 2-channel radio control system. 2-channel means that there are 2 servos connected to the receiver. The receiver needs a 6-volt supply to run, usually via four AA sized batteries.


Tips: Never, ever, cut the antenna wire. I know the wire is long but still, resist the temptation to cut it. To avoid radio glitches, keep the receiver and antenna as far away as possible from the 2-stroke engine. Servos - The servos are small mechanical motors with decide the speed and direction the car will travel. Nitro RC cars have two servos, one connected to the carburetor, another to the steering mechanism. The servo connected to the carburetor controls the speed of the car. It also controls the braking mechanism. The second servo is connected to the steering mechanism, controlling the direction of the cars front wheels. Frequency Crystals - The transmitter sends signals to the receiver on a specific frequency. Removable frequency crystals, located at both the transmitter and receiver, determine this frequency.

Electric RC Helicopters - What You Should Know Before You Start

Electric RC helicopters can be a challenge! Most everyone agrees that RC model helicopters are the single most challenging R/C models to build and operate, and electric helicopters are no exception. In fact, because their flight times are shorter than gas powered units, it can hinder someone just learning the ropes and their sensitivity to wind can intimidate beginners too.


They're mechanically complex and they require you to master two distinctly different skills, forward flight and hovering. To pilot them successfully, your FULL attention is required. There have recently been some very impressive advances which give more hobbyists a good shot at getting electric RC helicopters in the air and keeping them there.


But if the question is, "Should my very first R/C model be a helicopter?"...I'd have to say no. You'll be much more ready and relaxed with a heli if you learn to fly a plane or glider first. We strongly recommend that you visit our airplane section, where there's no shortage of other exciting ways to go airborne. What Can an Electric RC Helicopter Do? The answer is, just about anything that involves flying! They'll hover in one spot. Fly backwards and sideways. Do pirouettes while in forward flight. Perform stall turns, loops, rolls, standing loops and rolls (a loop or roll with no forward speed)...even fly upside-down and hover while only inches off the ground. Let's see an airplane, or even a full-size helicopter, do that! In normal forward flight, electric helicopters fly at about 20-30 mph and approximately 150 feet high.


PREREQUISITES


It helps to have good building skills for assembling electric rc helicopters. If not, take the time to develop them in this hobby. You'll need a sufficiently large space and hopefully uninterrupted time...from 2 hours for a simple setup to hundreds of hours for more complex RC model helicopters. Have an open mind and be willing to learn new things. Being methodical will help solve many problems you'll encounter in the hobby. You don't need fast reflexes to succeed, but you must be able to develop new ones. Optimism and sense of humor can help, especially after an electric RC helicopters mishap. More often than not, patience is a virtue.


DUE DILIGENCE


Find a local club and flying field to get a firsthand look of the exciting world of electric helicopters and meet the flyers - they will become valuable help. If there are no local clubs, check out Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) and its monthly publication Model Aviation and try to find the closest club in your area. Try to attend a fly-in of electric helicopters or an airshow nearby (see calendar posted in Model Aviation or ask your local hobby shop) and watch how the pros do it.


Once you're committed to the hobby, apply for an AMA membership as soon as possible. It's a requirement for clubs/flying fields, and you'll get a very good insurance policy, too. Get some literature, either an RC heli magazine, a book, or video tape and I highly recommend checking out these RC heli videos.

Fiberglass has also been a common material for making model airplanes because of its sturdy nature. The drawback of fiberglass is that most model builders have to buy pre-made frame pieces for fiberglass construction. It just isnt a material that many people work with in their own workshops. But the strength it provides in relation to its weight makes it a great model aircraft material.


From those builders who like to work from kits, the main advance in airplane frames and components has been the manufacturing of injection molded Styrofoam & plastic parts such as GWS electric radio control airplanes. The molding of plastic certainly isnt a process you would want to carry out in your own garage, but this technology offers several benefits to the construction of model airplanes. The main benefit is that pieces and components can be formed that are very precise and of great detail. This results in smooth curves, accurate and well-defined detail, and a basically more aerodynamic and realistic model.


So what is injection molding, anyway? In injection molding, a detailed mold is created for model components. These molds are made in a variety of ways from detailed carving to creating a mold from an already formed piece. Once the mold is created, small plastic pellets are heated and the resulting melted plastic substance is injected into the mold. Injection is more effective than pouring because it gets the plastic into small crevices and very detailed parts of the mold. The plastic is then allowed to cool, and thus the part is formed.

Essential Radio Control Air Planes Parts

A great way to become familiar with radio control air planes is to understand the parts that make up the control system. These parts


include the transmitter, receiver, servos and battery pack. There are, of course, other parts involved in the airplanes flight, but


these are the ones that make up the brains of your plane.


The transmitter is the control interface between the pilot and the radio control air planes. Transmitters can come in 2, 4 or 6


channels, and generally consist of two joysticks and various other switches and controls. The joysticks are used for left, right, up,


and down controls, and the configuration depends on if the transmitter is a 2 or 4 channel radio. These joysticks on the transmitter can


also be set up by the user, giving the pilot customized control over how the plane responds to the transmitter.


The transmitter sends signals as dictated by how the pilot moves the transmitter part positions, and these signals are picked up by a


receiver which is integrated into the structure of the radio control air planes themselves The receiver takes this signal and transfers


it to the servos which are also located on the plane. The motion of the servos is called proportional motion because the more a pilot


moves a control, the more motion the servo responds with.


Servos are small electric motors with gears and the servos are connected to moveable parts of the radio control air planes. The receiver


converts signals to the servo, and the servo converts this signal into motion by moving the part of the plane it is connected to. Rudder


control, throttle control, landing gear you name it...if there is a servo involved the transmitter can be set up to control it!


All of this motion of the radio control air planes is dependent upon the battery packs used to make this transferring of signals happen.


Battery packs are made of battery cells, the number of cells dictating the power output of the battery pack as a whole. The most common


batteries are Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh), which are rechargeable and last through countless charges.


So these parts...the transmitter, receiver, servos, and battery pack, make up the control system of your radio control air planes. No


matter what else you spend your time and money on, its worth the effort to make sure this control system is adequate and functioning


properly.


After all, it is this system that dictates how far you can fly and how much control you have over your plane when its in the air. Try to


remember that it doesnt matter how fast a plane goes if the pilot isnt in complete control.

Radio Control Jets

Its important to note that the engine choice of an aircraft is not an afterthought. It is an essential part of the aircrafts design. You cant put a turbine engine on just any radio control jet. A turbine engine must be supported by a very structurally sound model jet frame. There is a lot of speed and vibration associated with a turbine engine, and your model has to be up to the physical strain.


An important consideration of turbine engines is safety. A turbine engine requires a heavier fuel load, and it operates at high temperatures. If a jet with a turbine engine crashes, fire is likely to follow. If you are operating a turbine engine jet, be sure to carry along a proper fire extinguisher and keep your distance from spectators.


Radio control aircraft can be a fun and exciting hobby. And if you are into speed, radio control jets may be just what you are looking for.



Hovercraft RC









Hovercraft RC are also sometimes called Air Cushion Vehicles or ACV. They can fliy like a plane but can float like a boat and can drive on land like a car all the while traversing ditches and small gullies. A thrust propeller pushes the craft forward on its bubble' of air. Rudders, like on an airplane, steer the direction of the craft.


This all applies to remote control hovercraft as well as the real thing. Needless to say, it's a unique method of transportation and an exciting hobby too! The idea for a hovercraft is attributed to Christopher Cockerell (later knighted Sir Christopher for inventing the Hovercraft) when he was working with small boats.


Today they are used for many applications where people or equipment need to travel at high speed over water but be able to load and unload on land.


The hovercraft RC engine provides the power to drive large fans that blow air under the craft and the air is trapped by a rubber skirt that enables it to travel over a wide range of terrain. Hovercraft RC, or remote control hovercraft have, until recently, been built by a small group of keen modelers but lately the hobby has become much more popular.


Model hovercraft, like many other RC models such as boats, airplanes, cars and helicopters, offer some problems in terms of scaling and operation when reduced from their full operating size.


The general operating principles remain the same but some modifications in the skirt arrangement are needed to make a successful remote control hovercraft replica of the original.


With hovercraft RC, the size of objects encountered on land and the wave size on water are two major problems when scaling model hovercraft. With gas engine driven craft there is also the added problems of water spray and dust, which will choke an engine and cause many running problems. The water poses a similar problem for electric powered remote control hovercraft. Single engine hovercraft RC use one engine to provide thrust and lift for the craft with the air being split into two flows. About 30% of the air is used under the craft for lift and the rest of the air exits the rear of the craft over a rudder and provides thrust.


This creates simple model hovercrafts with the advantage that they can be controlled from a low cost 2-channel radio control system. Twin engine model hovercrafts provide one engine for lift and one for thrust. The engines can operate independently and therefore require at least a 3-channel radio system.


The lift motor can be set using one throttle setting and the thrust controlled independently from another radio control channel. This type of hovercraft RC model generally provides better performance in terms of the height it can hover and the speed it can achieve.

The customer hires the company based on what is promised and it better be delivered or that company will be replaced by another who will keep their commitments. Hiring personnel with a good work ethic and unquestioned honesty is a requirement that must be kept at all times.




A family could start this type of business and run it from their home while they built the business up over time. The equipment needed is not out of range in cost and can be purchased easily by someone looking to get into the business.




Careful attention to detail is important, as a dusty lamp could easily be spotted. Desk side waste containers that are not emptied would be another area of obvious notice that the cleaning job was done in a haphazard manner. A restroom that is not left as a thoroughly cleaned space would stand out like a sore eye. The way to keep customers and get referrals is to do the job better than expected. This starts with the owner of the cleaning business and is part of the work ethic of the helpers who do the work.




Spot-checking by the owner or supervisor is critical to keeping the work up to the standards promised. Promises made to the customer must be kept all of the time. If weather or an unexpected emergency prevents the work one night or weekend, the customer must be told why and when it will be completed. Communication with the customer is always important in a service business.





Collective Pitch Works

When a RC helicopter needs to climb or descend, it uses collective pitch. When the command is given for the helicopter to climb, the servos push the entire swashplate upwards. This has the effect of simultaneously increasing the pitch of all the rotor blades. When the pitch is increased, the rotors grab more air as they move, and so lift produced is increased. This increase in lift occurs evenly, so the helicopter does not turn. When the helicopter needs to descend, the swashplate is lowered in the same way. This will decrease the amount of lift produced from the rotor blades.


RC Helicopter Cyclic Collective Pitch Mixing (CCPM)


Model RC helicopters can use more than two servos in combination to control the motion of the swashplate. Software running on the rc transmitter (radio) tells each servo how much to move to achieve the desired motion of the RC helicopter. Each linkage to a servo is represented by a silver rod in the above picture. All of these rods are placed equidistant from each other. A swashplate mix refers to the number of linkages attached. For example: a two linkage swashplate would be controlled by two servo rods, placed 180 degrees apart from each other. A three linkage swashplate would use a 120 degree swash plate mix. The swash plate in the picture above has 6 control rods, and so it would use a 60 degree swash plate mix. Most RC helicopters will use a swashplate with between two or four control rods. The largest RC Helicopters use 4 control rods, because of the extra strength they give the swashplate mechanism.

Using Lithium Polymer Batteries

If you know how much continuous current will be drawn and the capacity of the pack you want to use, you can easily determine what C rating you require. If you are drawing 5A from a 1320mAh pack, simply take the current and divide by the capacity: 5A = 5000mA, 5000mA / 1320mAh = 3.8C.


Burst Current:


LiPo batteries are also given a C rating in terms of burst, which is how quickly the battery is able to discharge for a short time. A burst rating of 20C would mean a 2000mAh battery could supply 20 x 2000mA = 40000mA or 40A for a few seconds.


Selecting the Best LiPo Battery for Your RC Helicopter


To select a battery for your rc helicopter, you first need to know what voltage you require and how much current you will be drawing continuously.


If the motor in your rc helicopter is rated to work with 11.1V, you would need a 3 cell battery.


If you need to draw 20A, and you would like your rc helicopter to have a 10 minute (1/6th of an hour = 6C) flight, you would need a battery with 20A / 6 = 3.3A = 3300mAh.


This means you would need to put a 3s 3300mAh battery with a C rating of 6 or higher in your rc helicopter.

DIY RC Aerial Photography

Alan Ramsdell is an electrician and long time RC enthusiast who lives in Sanford, Maine. Recently, he has begun retrofitting one of his


RC helicopters with a high resolution digital camera to do RC aerial photography. The helicopter is also equipped with an infrared


sensor mounted on the tail, which can sense the temperature difference between the ground and the sky. It uses this to self stabilize,


and helps to steady the camera when doing RC aerial photography.




The modified RC helicopter is also equipped with a radio which sends a wireless


video signal to the ground, so that Ramsdell can see what the camera sees. Once the helicopter is in position, a switch on the


transmitter will trigger the camera. This allows the helicopter to be used for very high quality, targeted RC aerial photography.




RC photography is a great way to get aerial pictures and video, without the expense of hiring an actual plane and pilot. Depending upon

Franklin and his research team polled women and men between the ages of 25 to 54 along with all the residents of Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Estonia, and they got responses from 15,556 people. Participants were asked about their childhood, such as whether they had a dog or any other pets, whether they were ever hospitalized for respiratory infections before the age of two, and whether they suffered from recurrent ear infections. They were also asked about the size of their family, their parents' educational background, and the ages of their mothers.


Lead author and physician at University Hospital in Umea, Sweden, Karl Franklin, M.D., Ph..D, has said that his research findings include identifying early life environments as affecting whether or not you are a snorer later in life. Other experts that have done similar studies with these findings say that more research will be needed, and Franklin even acknowledges that the research is no reason to steer clear of the idea of childhood pets. The researchers found that four independently associated with snoring later in life.



  • If they were hospitalized for a respiratory infection before the age of 2, their risk of later snoring was boosted by 1.27 times.

  • If they suffered from reccurent ear infections as a child their risk was raised by 1.18 times.

  • If they grew up in a family with more than five members it increased their risk by 1.04 times.

  • If they exposure to a dog in the houshold as a newborn their risk was boosted by 1.26 times.


Franklin decided to take a look at early childhood exposures and later risk of snoring, following a trend in medical research of looking at how many adult associated diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular, can be traced to childhood exposures and experiences. He stated that exactly why the exposures he found associated with snoring ups the risk is not yet known. "Perhaps these things like dogs, infection, might increase the size of the tonsils," and that could in turn boost the risk of snoring later in life.


A sleep medicine expert and a the medical director of Northshore Sleep Medicine in Evanston, Illinois, said that the findings of the study need significant follow-up research. "This doesn't say much to me," she stated about the findings. Early infections are the most feasible of all of the risk factors associated with boosting the risk of snoring. "It's not clear how the dog and the large family is associated with snoring." The two risk factors that are well known for snoring, she says, are the structure of the throat of each individual and obesity.

RC Helicopter Flying Tips

1. If something looks to be wrong with your rc helicopter, land right away to find out what it is. It's not going to go away on its own.


2. Fly the nose, not the tail unless you want to become totally disoriented.


3. If your RC heli gets the shakes, land and check to see if your blades are balanced and track properly. Other causes can be blade pitch, weight imbalance, RPM and so on.


4. When flying non-electric rc helicopters, always make sure you can see smoke coming out of the heli. If there's no smoke, it's likely that you're engine is running too lean. Too lean means too much heat which can destroy the engine.


5. Be sure that no loose wiring rubs against the frame. You can use a nylon braid to protect it.


6. Don't let metal or carbon fiber parts rub against each other. It can cause RF interference which can lead to a crash.


7. Monitor your battery's voltage with a battery monitor or by timing known flight times.


8. Experiment all you like - in a simulator where crashing doesn't cost a significant amount of time ort money.


9. When you're done flying your nitro or gasser for the day, tilt the heli backwards after flying to drain the sticky stuff out of the muffler. This will protect your car from nasty drippages.
